Peter O'Loughlin was a proud member and supporter of the Port Football Club. Born into a one eyed Port family Peter had a life long association with the Club. Peter was involved in many aspects of the Club from a player, committeeman , selector and a very proud & loyal supporter.
Peter commenced seconds football for the Club in 1962 and played in the 1965 & 1966 Seconds Premiership sides.
Peter was Treasurer of the Club for four years from 1965 to 1968 a period in which not only did he play in 2 seconds premiership but the league side won three in a row, 1965, 1966, 1967.
For three years from 1969 to 1971 Peter was a seconds selector and during this time the seconds won back to back Premierships in 1969 & 1970. Peter was granted life membership of the Club in 1971. Peter was again elected to the management committee of the Club in 1979.
Peter was a volunteer barman in our old Club Rooms for many years and enjoyed himself immensely with the many Premierships. Peter made many life long friends through this decade of outstanding success at the Club but Peter was not to know like many of us that success was not to return to the Club for many years. Peter's support & passion for the Club never wavered during this period with him attending all games.
His continued involvement in the Club saw him become involved in the Port Football Club Past Players & Officials Association and the Vice Presidents.
Peter assisted Hughie & Marie Murphy for many years with the Past Players Football Tips. Peter was on the committee of the Past Players and will always be remembered for his diligent efforts at working bees in ensuring all those who attended had plenty of beer, food & chairs with the emphasis on cold beer.
Peter became Chairman of the Port Football Club Vice Presidents a position he held for about 10 years. Peter's financial contribution and support to the Vice Presidents over this time was very significant. The Vice President's under Peter made considerable financial contributions to the Club.
With his good mate & card partner Allan Messenger, Peter assisted in running the Club lotteries for a 5 year period. Peter and Allan could be found at the bar playing crib many nights of the week.
Peter visited the Port Club on most days for a beer and a punt or to have a chat. Invariably Peter struck up a special relationship with everyone at the Club and the staff. Peter always made a point of introducing to himself to new members & footballers. After a game Peter was the first to congratulate a player with a handshake after a good game.
Peter enjoyed thoroughly the success of recent times and had great delight in wearing his green and white shirts around town.
